Famiglia di anfipodi, ad affinità incerte, forse paleomeditterranea, il genere Salentinella è in revisione, la Salentinella franciscoloi tipica della Liguria è diffusa in sistemi carsici isolati, in ambiente montano, vive esclusivamente in ambiente acquatico, predilige gli interstizi.
